How did Sitemasher start?

One cold spring night in 2006, a friend of Phil Calvin’s asked him for help with his website. Phil sat down to do just that, but became increasingly frustrated at how archaic website technology had remained since the “dot-bomb” era not so long ago. Although many new technologies had been created, it still seemed that the fundamental underlying architecture had not kept pace, and that all of the new technologies had layered themselves on top of one that was inherently flawed.

Phil felt that the current technology was much like pre-Windows life for PC users, when people had to use MS-DOS commands just to access their programs, and formatting text in applications such as WordPerfect required intimate knowledge of specific codes. When Windows was born a few years later, it finally removed the need for this knowledge and opened up PC use to a massive global audience.

So Phil sat down to solve this problem and by August 2007, he had completed the fundamental architecture. He called up Ron Moravek to pitch him the dream of what Sitemasher could be. Ron was immediately sold and they both spent the next three months pitching every technologist, “neckbeard”, nerd, IT professional, smart biz guy, and Star Trek watcher they knew to validate the idea. At the end of those three months, with many new believers watching, Sitemasher was born. By November 2007, a rag-tag group of dreamers moved into their first office in Vancouver and began taking Sitemasher from cool-demo mode to a product that the SMB market could really use for their businesses.

Today Sitemasher has offices in Vancouver and Miami. Sitemasher’s company philosophy focuses on removing the pain that currently exists when building and maintaining websites. Our culture is one of teamwork and transparency with both employees and customers. The way we look at it, if it’s not apparent that Sitemasher can save our customers time and effort building, managing, and optimizing their websites, then we’re not doing our job.
